There are lots of things on the market that promise to reduce the amount of power our households and industry use, simply by being able to generate the power they need themselves. These are solar products and they come in two formats.

They either have a solar panel and some battery capability to store the electricity they consume, which is small. Even back in the early 1980’s nearly everyone had one of those solar powered calculators.

The most modern and maybe well known version of that idea now is the fuel cell powered laptop. It uses power from its solar panel to manufacture hydrogen which is then used in a fuel cell to make electricity which sounds much more complicated but produces more power than the original solar system.
